Paver & Stone Patios

An outdoor room built from the base up, so it stays flat for decades.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

A patio is only as good as what’s underneath it. Pavers that sink, shift or grow weeds in the joints almost always come from a thin or poorly compacted base.

Every patio we build starts with proper excavation and a compacted stone base, then edge restraints and polymeric sand to lock it all together.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Design and layout

Size, shape, paver style and pattern chosen with you; the area is marked out and checked for slope.

  2. 02

    Utility mark-out

NJ One Call (811) is contacted before any digging.

  3. 03

    Excavate

Soil removed about 7 to 9 inches down, sloped slightly away from the house for drainage.

  4. 04

    Build and compact the base

4 to 6 inches of dense-graded stone, compacted in layers with a plate compactor, then an inch of screeded bedding sand.

  5. 05

    Lay the pavers

Pavers set in the chosen pattern and cut to fit, with edge restraints installed around the perimeter.

  6. 06

    Lock it in

Compacted again and swept with polymeric sand, which hardens to lock the joints and resist weeds and ants.

The labor & equipment

A 3 to 4-person crew with an excavator, plate compactor and wet saw. A typical 300 to 400 sq ft patio takes about 3 to 6 days.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Use a plastic shovel

Metal shovel edges can chip paver surfaces in winter.

Gentle ice melt

Calcium or magnesium chloride is gentler on pavers than rock salt.

Clean spills quickly

Oil, grease and leaf stains are easier to remove when fresh.

Top up the joints

Every few years, joints may need fresh polymeric sand. It keeps pavers locked and weeds out.

Good to know

Common questions about patios

Pavers or concrete?

Concrete costs less up front but cracks, and repairs never match. Pavers flex with freeze-thaw, individual pieces can be replaced, and they look more finished.

Why is the base so important?

NJ winters freeze and thaw the ground dozens of times. A deep, compacted stone base drains water away so the ground underneath doesn’t heave and sink.

Do I need a permit for a patio in NJ?

Many Bergen County towns require a zoning or lot-coverage review for new impervious surfaces. We’ll tell you if your project needs one.
