Shrub & Hedge Trimming

Clean, shaped shrubs and hedges that frame your home and stay healthy.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

Overgrown shrubs make a home look neglected, block windows and walks, and get thin and leggy at the bottom. But trimming at the wrong time can cut off next year’s flowers.

Your plan includes a professional trim and shaping each season, timed to what you have planted.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Identify the plants

Spring bloomers (azaleas, lilacs, forsythia) are trimmed right after they flower; most hedges and evergreens in late spring to early summer.

  2. 02

    Shape, don’t just shear

Hedges are kept slightly wider at the bottom than the top so sunlight reaches the lower branches and they stay full.

  3. 03

    Clear away from the house

Branches touching siding, windows, roofs and walks are cut back.

  4. 04

    Full cleanup

All clippings collected from beds, lawn and walks and removed.

The labor & equipment

A 2-person crew with hedge trimmers and hand pruners. Typically 1 to 4 hours depending on the number and size of shrubs.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Water new growth in dry spells

Shrubs freshly trimmed in early summer appreciate a deep watering once a week during droughts.

Leave flowering shrubs to us

Many shrubs set next year’s flower buds in summer. Cutting them in fall or early spring can remove the flowers.

Mulch the base

A 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch around (not against) shrubs holds moisture and protects roots.

Common questions about shrub & hedge trimming

When should shrubs be trimmed in New Jersey?

It depends on the plant. Spring-flowering shrubs are trimmed right after bloom; most hedges in late spring and early summer. Avoid heavy trimming after mid-September, because new growth won’t harden off before frost.

Why is my hedge bare at the bottom?

Usually because it was trimmed wider at the top, which shades the lower branches. Proper shaping fixes it over a season or two.

Can I trim my hydrangeas?

Careful: many common hydrangeas bloom on last year’s wood, so cutting them back in fall or spring removes the flowers. We trim them at the right time or leave them be.
