Flower & Seasonal Planting

Seasonal color in your beds and borders, planted to thrive.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

A few well-chosen flowers transform a front walk. The difference between color that lasts all season and plants that fade by July comes down to the right plants for the spot and good soil prep.

We help pick annuals and perennials for your sun and shade, prepare the soil, plant at the right time and finish with mulch.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Plan for sun and shade

Plants matched to how many hours of sun each bed gets.

  2. 02

    Prepare the soil

Beds loosened and enriched with compost so roots establish quickly.

  3. 03

    Plant at the right time

Annuals go in after the last frost, typically early to mid May in Bergen County.

  4. 04

    Water in and mulch

Plants are watered in and mulched to hold moisture.

The labor & equipment

A 1 to 2-person crew. A typical front bed takes 1 to 3 hours.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Should I water my flowers every day?

For the first 1 to 2 weeks after planting, yes, especially in heat. After that, water when the top inch of soil is dry. Containers and hanging baskets often need daily water in July and August.

Water the soil, not the leaves

Aim at the base of the plants in the morning. Wet leaves overnight invite disease.

Deadhead for more blooms

Pinching off faded flowers keeps many annuals blooming all summer.

Feed lightly

A light, slow-release flower food in early summer keeps annuals going.

Good to know

Common questions about flower planting

When should I plant flowers in New Jersey?

Most annuals go in after the last frost, usually early to mid May in Bergen County. Pansies and other cool-season flowers can go in earlier in spring and again in fall.

Annuals or perennials?

Annuals give nonstop color for one season and need replanting each year. Perennials come back every year but bloom for shorter windows. Most great beds use both.
