Retaining Walls

Walls engineered to hold the hill, with the drainage behind them that most walls are missing.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

Retaining walls hold back soil to create flat, usable space on sloped properties, which are common on the Palisades side of Bergen County. They also prevent erosion and add structure to a landscape.

Most retaining walls that bulge or lean failed because of water pressure behind them. Proper drainage is built into every wall we install.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Layout and mark-out

Wall height and location set; NJ One Call (811) contacted before digging.

  2. 02

    Excavate and build a footing

A trench dug and filled with compacted crushed stone as a level footing.

  3. 03

    Bury the first course

The bottom row is set partly below grade for stability.

  4. 04

    Drainage behind the wall

Clean drainage stone and a perforated pipe behind the wall carry water away so pressure can’t build.

  5. 05

    Build and reinforce

Courses stacked with the proper setback; taller walls get geogrid reinforcement layered into the soil.

  6. 06

    Cap and backfill

Capstones adhered and the area behind backfilled and graded.

The labor & equipment

A 3 to 4-person crew with an excavator and compactor. A typical 30 to 50 ft garden wall takes about 3 to 7 days.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Keep drainage outlets clear

If your wall has pipe outlets, keep them free of leaves and soil so water can escape.

Mind the load on top

Don’t add pools, sheds, vehicles or heavy fill near the top of a wall without checking with us first.

Watch for changes

Bulging, leaning or new cracks are early signs to have a wall looked at.

Good to know

Common questions about retaining walls

Why do retaining walls fail?

Water. When rain soaks the soil behind a wall with no drainage, the pressure pushes it until it bulges, leans or collapses. Drainage stone and pipe behind the wall prevent that.

Do I need an engineer for a retaining wall in NJ?

Walls over about 4 feet tall, or walls holding up a driveway or structure, generally need an engineered design and a permit. We’ll tell you during the visit.

FAQ
