Spring Cleanup & Dethatching

Everything winter left behind, cleared out so your lawn starts the season strong.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

Winter leaves behind matted leaves, sticks, sand from the street and dead plant material. Left alone, it smothers the grass, delays green-up and invites disease.

A proper spring cleanup resets the whole property: lawn, beds and edges, so the season starts clean.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Clear debris

Leftover leaves, sticks, fallen branches and winter debris raked and blown out of the lawn, beds and corners.

  2. 02

    Clean out the beds

Dead annuals and last year’s perennial stems cut back, beds tidied and ready for mulch.

  3. 03

    Dethatch the lawn

The matted layer of dead grass (thatch) is pulled up so water, air and fertilizer reach the soil. Done when thatch is thicker than about ½ inch.

  4. 04

    First cut and edges

Edges along walks and beds cleaned up for a sharp start.

  5. 05

    Haul it away

Everything we collect is taken off your property.

The labor & equipment

A 2 to 3-person crew with rakes, blowers and a dethatcher. Typically 2 to 5 hours depending on the property.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Stay off soggy ground

Walking or driving on wet, thawing soil in March compacts it. Wait until it’s firm.

Hold off on raking hard

Aggressive raking on wet lawns tears out healthy grass. Leave it to the cleanup.

First mows run high

The first few cuts of the year are kept high to let the grass thicken.

Good to know

Common questions about spring cleanup

What is thatch and why remove it?

Thatch is a layer of dead stems and roots between the grass and the soil. A thin layer is fine, but more than about ½ inch acts like a roof that blocks water and nutrients and holds disease.

When should spring cleanup be done in NJ?

Late March into April, once the ground is firm enough to walk on without leaving footprints. Working soggy soil compacts it.

Is spring cleanup worth it?

Yes. It’s the difference between a lawn that greens up evenly in April and one that stays patchy into May.
