Topsoil & Grading

A level, well-drained foundation for a new lawn, patio or garden.

OverviewHow we do itCare tipsQuestionsFAQ
Overview

What it is, and why it matters

Grading shapes the ground so water flows away from your home and the yard is smooth enough for a great lawn. Topsoil adds the healthy growing layer that construction and erosion often strip away.

It’s the first step before sod, seed or any hardscape.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Survey the slope

Check how the ground drains today and where water should go.

  2. 02

    Rough grade

Soil moved and shaped so the ground slopes away from the house.

  3. 03

    Add topsoil

Screened topsoil spread to a 4 to 6-inch growing layer.

  4. 04

    Fine grade

Raked smooth and rolled, ready for seed, sod or planting.

The labor & equipment

A 2 to 3-person crew with a skid steer or mini excavator. Most jobs take 1 to 3 days.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Let it settle

New soil settles over the first few rains. Minor low spots can be topped up.

Water new seed

Keep newly seeded areas lightly moist until the grass sprouts.

Keep heavy equipment off

Avoid driving on freshly graded areas, which compacts the soil.

Good to know

Common questions about topsoil & grading

How should my yard slope?

Away from the house: about 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet is a common guideline.

Why add topsoil before seeding?

Grass roots need loose, organic soil. Seeding onto compacted subsoil or clay gives a thin, weak lawn.

FAQ

Working with us

Do I need grading before sod?

Usually some fine grading and topsoil, yes. It’s what makes a new lawn smooth and healthy.
