Weed Control

Lawn, flower beds and hard surfaces kept clean of weeds all season long.

Overview

What it is, and why it matters

Weed control works in two ways: stopping weeds before they sprout (pre-emergent) and treating weeds that are already growing (post-emergent). The best results come from timing both correctly and keeping the lawn thick, so weeds have nowhere to go.

Your plan covers weeds in the lawn, in flower and shrub beds, and in the cracks of walkways, patios and driveways, so the whole property looks cared for.

The process

Exactly how we do it

Every step, so you know what you’re getting and why it’s done that way.

  1. 01

    Pre-emergent in early spring

Applied when soil warms to about 55°F, usually early to mid April here (when the forsythia blooms). It stops crabgrass seeds from establishing.

  2. 02

    Spot-treat broadleaf weeds

Dandelions, clover, plantain and other broadleaf weeds are treated where they appear, instead of blanket-spraying the whole lawn.

  3. 03

    Beds and hard surfaces

Weeds in beds and in walkway, patio and driveway cracks are pulled or treated during visits.

  4. 04

    Fall clean-up treatment

Fall is the best time to knock out perennial broadleaf weeds, because they pull the treatment down into their roots as they store energy for winter.

The labor & equipment

Handled during regular visits by a trained crew member, with targeted spot treatments and hand-pulling in beds.

Care tips

How to get the most out of it

Simple things you can do between visits, including how and when to water.

Mow tall

Grass kept at 3 to 4 inches shades the soil, which is the single best way to keep crabgrass from sprouting.

Give treatments time

Broadleaf weeds take 7 to 14 days to curl and die after treatment. Avoid mowing for a day before and after a weed treatment.

Don’t disturb the barrier

After a spring pre-emergent, avoid digging, raking hard or aerating the treated lawn, which breaks the barrier.

Seeding and weed control

New grass seed and pre-emergent don’t mix, which is why overseeding is done in early fall.

Common questions about weed control

When should crabgrass preventer go down in NJ?

Usually early to mid April, before soil reaches about 55°F for several days. Too early and it wears off; too late and the crabgrass has already sprouted.

Why do weeds keep coming back?

Thin spots and short mowing give weed seeds light and space. Weed control works best combined with proper mowing height, fertilization and overseeding, which is why they’re all in the same plan.

Can I overseed and use weed control at the same time?

Not with most pre-emergents, which also stop grass seed from sprouting. That’s why we time pre-emergent in spring and overseeding in early fall.
